Background

Artists may be required to provide a Statement by Supplier form. You would like to know when and why this is required.

Explanation

Under Australian Taxation Law, businesses are generally required to withhold 47% of payments to Suppliers (in this case, Artists) that do not hold an ABN (Australian Business Number) for payment to the Australian Taxation Office.

An exemption from this ruling is available to hobbyist Artists (that do not hold ABN) by completing a Statement by a Supplier form that declares the supply is not made in the course of carrying on a business.

Therefore, the rule is simple:

  • If an ABN is provided, no Statement by a Supplier need be completed.
  • If no ABN is provided, Artist should complete the Statement of a Supplier form and upload in Step 6 - Supplier Details of their Art Show Application.

If the Artist provides an ABN, they are also required to specify whether they are registered for GST.

Ensuring a Statement by a Supplier is completed when required.

Curators can easily see those Artists that do not hold an ABN and have not provided a Statement by a Supplier form.
